Compensation transparency

Broker Compensation Disclosure for Employer Health Plans

Questions employers can use to understand broker and consultant compensation, incentives and disclosure practices.

By Corry Hull, REBC®, CSFS® — Vice President of Employee Benefits at BHC Insurance

Compensation disclosure is a governance practice, not an accusation. Employers need a clear view of every material compensation stream connected to advice, placement, administration or affiliated services.

Ask for the amount or formula, paying entity, services covered, contingent incentives, affiliate relationships and any compensation that may vary with vendor selection. Compare the disclosure to contracts and invoices where appropriate.

Document how leadership evaluated the information and any resulting decision. When incentives are visible, the employer can test whether recommendations align with plan objectives and participant interests.
